Shosholoza – A Taste of Southern Africa was created to provide Southern African expats living in the UK with an opportunity to experience the wonderful home cooked food that we all miss. It also provides an opportunity to share these amazing, tasty meals with the British public.
Shosholoza is a traditional miner’s song, originally sung by groups of men from the Ndebele ethnic group that travelled by steam train from their homes in Zimbabwe (formerly known as Rhodesia) to work in South Africa’s diamond and gold mines. It is used as a term of encouragement and hope for the workers as a sign of solidarity. The Ndebele live predominantly in Zimbabwe near its border with South Africa. The song uses Ndebele words and is Zimbabwean in origin even though the Zulu and Zimbabwean Ndebele ethnic groups are very similar.
The idea for Shosholoza was the brainchild of Busi Forbes, who herself was brought up in Zimbabwe, and South Africa and throughout her years living between both countries found a love of traditional food. Busi brought in Marc Christensen to help build the restaurant and create a brand and identity here in the UK.
Marc says “ with Shosholoza – A Taste of Southern Africa, we wanted to create a truly African experience where customers can feel like they are being transported from the streets of Glasgow to the streets of Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg, or Harare. With the cooking style, the menu, the décor and even the music we play, it is focused on traditional Southern Africa.
Our team is made up of South African and Zimbabwean expats living in Glasgow which adds to that authentic experience. As we grow and build the brand, we will look to recruit team members from within the local community and introduce them to a new food concept in Glasgow.
Shosholoza – A Taste of Southern Africa is a relaxing, easy going dining experience that focuses on ensuring customers have a great experience. Whether you get a song for your birthday, or you pop in for a quick bite to eat and watch a bit of rugby on one of the TV screens, the customers experience is always a priority.
